The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) recorded a major operational boost on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, with the commissioning of the reactivated Super Puma helicopter (NAF 565) at 205 Rotary Wing, Ikeja, Lagos, as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the Service’s resolve to sustain decisive airpower in defence of the nation. Describing the event as a symbol of renewed capability, Air Marshal Aneke said the reactivation of the aircraft went beyond restoring a platform to the fleet. “This occasion is not merely about the return of an aircraft to our fleet, but a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to enhance and sustain a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready force,” he stated. According to him, the restoration of legacy platforms remains a critical component of efforts to strengthen national security and maintain operational superiority across all theatres. The CAS expressed deep appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda is yielding tangible gains through strategic acquisitions and the restoration of critical assets. He described the Super Puma helicopter as indispensable to NAF operations, calling it a “workhorse whose role is second to none in the Nigerian Air Force.”Air Marshal Aneke highlighted the aircraft’s versatility in troop transport, casualty evacuation, search and rescue, and logistics support, adding that it has also proven effective in Operation Hadin Kai and other joint operations nationwide. He commended the consultant, retired Air Commodore T. A. Badru, the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command, and the technicians of 205 Rotary Wing for their professionalism and dedication to duty. The CAS charged personnel to uphold strict safety and maintenance standards, urging them to let the reactivated aircraft reflect the NAF’s strong culture of airmanship, maintenance discipline and pride.During a durbar with personnel at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, Air Marshal Aneke noted the improved operational tempo of the Service and revealed that the NAF is fast-tracking the induction of advanced platforms. He assured personnel that the incoming platforms would deliver unprecedented precision strike capabilities and strengthen regional deterrence.Reaffirming his welfare-driven leadership philosophy anchored on “Welfare for Enhanced Warfare,” the CAS pledged continued improvements in accommodation, allowances and medical support, while urging airmen to remain disciplined, professional and mission-focused as operations intensify across the country.
