Tincan Island Port Customs Concludes In-House Training

The Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully concluded a week-long in-house training programme aimed at enhancing the capacity, professionalism, and operational efficiency of its senior officers.
Held from Monday, October 13 to Friday, October 17, 2025, within the Command premises, the training brought together officers from various units and departments for an intensive knowledge-sharing and skill-enhancement exercise.
Declaring the programme open, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, underscored the importance of continuous learning and professional development within the Service. He urged participants to seize such opportunities to improve their expertise and adapt to the evolving demands of modern customs operations.
“This training is not just a routine exercise but an investment in the growth of our personnel,” Onyeka stated. “I urge all officers to apply the knowledge gained to their daily responsibilities and continue to strive for excellence in service delivery.”
He also disclosed that while the just-concluded session focused on senior officers, plans are in motion to extend similar training to junior officers soon, ensuring that all cadres benefit from the Command’s commitment to capacity building.
Resource persons for the programme were drawn from within the Command, showcasing the wealth of knowledge and experience available internally. Key topics covered during the sessions included Physical Examination (facilitated by the Area Controller), Reputation Management, Risk Management and Documentary Checks, Evidence Exploitation, Customs Procedure Codes, Customs Classification, VIN Valuation, Customs Valuation, Code of Conduct, and Customs Administration, among others.
In his closing remarks, Comptroller Onyeka reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to nurturing a highly skilled, knowledgeable, and proactive workforce capable of addressing the dynamic challenges of modern customs operations.
Participants commended the initiative, describing the training as both impactful and practical. They noted that the sessions offered fresh perspectives and practical tools that would enhance their effectiveness on the job.
Assistant Controller Rose Bonat of the Transire Unit lauded the Command for what she described as a “laudable and forward-thinking initiative.” She said the programme exposed her to updated Standard Operating Procedures and best practices that would boost her efficiency and confidence.
“This training has broadened my understanding and equipped me with tools that are directly applicable to my role. I commend the leadership of the Command for investing in the professional growth of officers.”
