Residents of Ayobo-Ipaja have been urged to take greater responsibility for their environment as the Lagos State Government reintroduces the monthly environmental sanitation exercise after a decade-long suspension. The exercise is set to resume on April 25, 2026, and will hold between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., with authorities stressing its importance in promoting public health and sustainable living.Speaking at a stakeholders’ sensitisation meeting, the Executive Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, Agbaje Lukmon Abiodun, described the initiative as a vital step toward restoring environmental discipline and strengthening community participation. He noted that maintaining a clean environment is key to preventing disease outbreaks, protecting drainage systems, and reducing flooding risks, particularly in a rapidly expanding community.“This is more than a routine exercise; it is a call to rebuild our culture of communal responsibility,” he said, urging residents, traders, artisans, and transport operators to actively participate. Also speaking, the council’s Director of Sanitation, Babajide Rachel, said the exercise aligns with existing environmental laws and reinforces civic responsibility among residents. While participation remains voluntary, she emphasised that it is strongly encouraged, noting that regular sanitation fosters behavioural change, environmental awareness, and a shared sense of duty.Officials outlined key activities for residents during the exercise, including clearing gutters and blocked drainage channels, proper waste bagging and disposal, and avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians and open spaces.Authorities warned that poor waste disposal contributes significantly to flooding and creates breeding grounds for diseases, underscoring the need for sustained behavioural change. The council reiterated its commitment to continuous public awareness campaigns and collaboration with relevant environmental agencies to ensure compliance and effectiveness.Stakeholders at the meeting were also tasked with mobilising their communities and promoting adherence to sanitation guidelines. With the revival of the monthly exercise, the council expressed optimism that collective efforts would transform Ayobo-Ipaja into a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible community. The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Vice Chairman, Ladi Oluwaloni; Secretary to the Local Government, Ahmad Yusuf; Leader of the Legislative Arm, Bamidele Farooq; and the Council Manager, Bankole Bawa, among other stakeholders.
