
President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The President also approved a special take-off grant of ₦15 billion for the institution, according to a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
The approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which the expansion of the academy—currently located in Wudil—into multiple campuses across the country.
Part of the statement noted that the intervention fund would be sourced from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund) 2026 allocation, aimed at financing critical infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential training assets.
The decision to site the new campus in Erinja followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.
The meeting assessed key considerations including student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing increased recruitment.
“President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security,” the statement added.
The development comes nearly five months after the President declared a nationwide security emergency and directed increased recruitment into the police force, amid rising incidents of attacks and abductions across the country.
