President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening economic relations with the United Kingdom, with a focus on aviation and other mutually beneficial sectors.
The President gave the assurance while receiving a delegation from British Airways, led by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, and the airline’s commercial officer, Colm Lacy, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Highlighting the enduring partnership between both nations, Tinubu said Nigeria places high value on its strategic relationship with the UK. He recalled his recent visit to Britain, describing the reception by King Charles III as memorable and historic.
He noted that decades of bilateral cooperation have laid a solid foundation for growth, investment, and shared prosperity, stressing that both countries must continue to build on this legacy.
The President acknowledged the role of British Airways in strengthening economic and cultural ties between Nigeria and the UK, noting that ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s aviation sector and broader economy are aimed at meeting global standards and boosting connectivity.
Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the British government for sustained investment and business opportunities extended to Nigeria over the years, while congratulating the airline on its 90 years of operations in the country.
He further disclosed that his administration had prioritised the resolution of outstanding financial obligations to foreign airlines, with the Central Bank of Nigeria addressing forex-related issues to restore confidence in the sector.
In his remarks, Lacy traced the airline’s long-standing relationship with Nigeria, describing the country as one of its most valued markets since operations began in 1936. He said British Airways has played a vital role in connecting Nigerians to global opportunities in trade, education, tourism, and investment.
He commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, as well as aviation agencies for their professionalism in maintaining safety and credibility in the industry. He also praised the Central Bank’s efforts in resolving foreign exchange challenges affecting airlines.
Earlier, Keyamo disclosed that British Airways now deploys brand-new aircraft on its Nigeria–London route and has complied with government policy by incorporating local cuisine on outbound international flights.
Also speaking, Montgomery welcomed the deepening partnership between both countries and expressed satisfaction with the outcome of Tinubu’s recent UK visit, noting that it led to key agreements aimed at boosting trade and investment, including the rehabilitation of Lagos ports with UK support.
