The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, has called on students in tertiary institutions across the Niger Delta to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a critical step toward shaping Nigeria’s future.
Ogbuku made the call at the launch of Project New Nigeria and a voter registration sensitisation programme organised by the Foundation for Citizens Empowerment in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. He was represented at the event by the Commission’s Director of Social Services, Engr. Jeremiah Oritsejolone.
He emphasised that the Permanent Voter Card, issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission, remains a vital tool for citizens to influence governance and elect leaders whose values reflect the aspirations of Nigerian youths.
Describing the voting process as a demonstration of citizens’ belief in a better Nigeria, Ogbuku said young people must take an active role in determining the country’s direction.
“The Nigerian youths are the heartbeat of the new Nigeria that we all seek. Your energy, brilliance and voice will determine the direction our nation takes. For your voice to be heard, you must collect your PVC, as it gives you the opportunity to influence decisions, shape governance and demand accountability,” he said.
He noted that since assuming office, the Commission has sustained transformation and capacity-building programmes across the region, and urged students to register and collect their PVCs ahead of upcoming general elections.
Ogbuku reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote civic participation and empower future generations.
Earlier, the Convener of Project New Nigeria, Mr Samuel Okani, said the initiative was designed to complement government efforts in strengthening democracy through voter education and orientation.
According to him, the programme is being implemented across universities in the region to broaden students’ understanding of the electoral process and encourage active participation.
“We are carrying out this exercise in all the universities in the region to give orientation and broaden students’ horizon on the need for them to collect their PVCs and actively participate in the voting process, as we believe this is another way for youths to influence the economy,” he said.
Okani expressed optimism that the programme would be sustained in the coming years.
