The Nigeria Revenue Service has dismissed as false and misleading a viral infographic alleging that the Federal Government has introduced a new vehicle tax effective July 1.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Zach Adedeji, and spokesperson for the service, Dare Adekambi, the agency said the claim was entirely fabricated and did not originate from any government body.
According to Adekambi, the circulating infographic directs owners of private, commercial and corporate vehicles to pay an unspecified tax rate online or through approved banks and agencies. He noted that the material, which bears no identifiable source, also misleadingly refers the public to a website that is not affiliated with the service.
He clarified that the official website of the NRS is www.nrs.gov.ng, stressing that the Federal Government has not introduced any new tax on vehicles as claimed.
“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the service or any government agency,” Adekambi said.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the message, describing it as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, and advised citizens to rely only on verified official channels for information on government policies.
Adekambi further encouraged the public to follow the official social media handles and website of the NRS for accurate and up-to-date information on tax matters and the agency’s activities.
