The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Pius Akutah, has stressed the need for Nigeria to prioritise green port initiatives and sustainable maritime practices to remain competitive in the evolving global shipping industry.
Akutah made the assertion in a goodwill message delivered at a workshop organised by the Shipping Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (SCAN) with the theme, “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers.”
The Shippers’ Council boss who was represented by Mrs Hanan Adaba, noted that environmental sustainability has become a critical focus for ports worldwide as the maritime industry increasingly adopts measures aimed at reducing environmental impact, improving operational efficiency, and complying with global climate standards.
According to him, “The choice of this theme is both timely and relevant. Across the globe, the maritime industry is increasingly embracing environmentally sustainable practices as ports strive to reduce their ecological footprint, improve operational efficiency, and align with international standards on climate action and environmental stewardship.”
He added that as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its position as a leading maritime hub on the African continent, sustainability must be embedded in port operations and development strategies.
“As Nigeria continues to position itself as a leading maritime hub in Africa, it is imperative that sustainability remains at the forefront of our port operations,” he said.
The NSC boss highlighted the strategic role of dockworkers in achieving sustainable port operations, noting that their day-to-day activities directly impact workplace safety, environmental protection, resource efficiency, and overall port productivity.
“Dockworkers play a pivotal role in achieving this objective. Their daily activities significantly influence workplace safety, environmental protection, resource efficiency, and overall port performance,” Akutah stated.
He urged dockworkers and other stakeholders to embrace responsible waste management practices, adhere strictly to safety standards, utilise equipment efficiently, and cultivate environmental consciousness in their operations.
“Promoting responsible waste management, adherence to safety standards, efficient use of equipment, and environmental consciousness among port workers will contribute immensely to building cleaner, safer, and more sustainable ports,” he said.
Akutah further reaffirmed the Nigerian Shippers’ Council’s commitment to initiatives that promote the welfare, safety, and working conditions of maritime workers, including dockworkers and seafarers.
“The Nigerian Shippers’ Council remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare, safety, and working conditions of maritime workers, including seafarers and dockworkers,” he said.
He explained that through stakeholder engagement, advocacy for compliance with international best practices, promotion of safer port operations, and regulatory interventions, the Council would continue to foster a maritime environment that supports trade facilitation, protects workers, and promotes sustainable development.
